Maybelline New York
“Maybe she’s born with it?” “Maybe it’s Maybelline.” If you have heard those words before, then you know the breadth of the company Maybelline, New York.
Owned by L’Oreal, this company sells thousands of different cosmetics ranging from mascara to foundation to applicators – all available in many different colors and types. L’Oreal is the second largest cosmetic company in the world, grossing $25.8 billion a year.
Among Maybelline’s most popular products are the Stiletto Mascaras and the Dream Liquid Foundation.
What is the history of Maybelline New York?
It was created by New York chemist T.L. Williams in 1915. While in his early 20’s, Williams noticed his younger sister would apply a combination of Vaseline and coal dust to her eyelashes to give them a darker, fuller look. He adapted it and sold it locally, calling it Lash-Brow-Ine.
Williams eventually re-named it Maybelline, a combination of Maybel (his sister’s name) and Vaseline.
In 1991, the company adopted its current advertising slogan, quoted at the beginning of this review. The company was acquired by L’Oréal in 1996. L’Oreal gained access to mass markets in cosmetics when it acquired Maybelline.
